Jim Thorpe was born on May 28th, 1887 in Prague, Oklahoma. After he graduated high school, he started school at Carlisle Industrial Indian School in Oklahoma. He was a big time athlete in track and field, football, and baseball. Jim won world gold medals in the pentathlon and decathlon during the 1912 Olympics that took place in Stockholm. He played six years of professional baseball. In January of 1913, he had his Olympic medals taken away from him. This happened because he was a professional competing in amateur competitions. He later then got his medals back in 1982. Jim was an outfielder for the New York Giants, the Cincinnati Reds and the Boston Braves. He served as the first president for National Football League. NFL named its most valuable player award the "Jim Thorpe Trophy". One of Jim Thorpe's quotes, "Track and field, because it was something I could do by myself, one-on-one, me against everybody else." This quote means that he was confident in his sports and it made him feel successful with his dream. Jim was encouraged by knowing that he was good enough to play by himself against other opponents. He is a lot like Michael Phelps because they both won a bunch of medals in the Olympics. Phelps was caught by the police because of the use of drugs which is somewhat similar to Thorpe because they both had something put against them. Thorpe had his most prized possessions taken from him and Phelps had his freedom and ability to swim taken from him.
